TAIPEI, Taiwan - Nearly 20 million voters will go to the polls on January 13 in Taiwan's presidential election, which analysts say will be "crucial" for the future of the Asian island and its relations with the United States and China.
Here's a quick guide to understand what's at stake.
1. What is Taiwan and how does it campaign?
Taiwan is an island (technically a main island and a collection of smaller islands) slightly larger than the state of Maryland and roughly 100 miles from the Chinese mainland.
The body of water that separates them is the Taiwan Strait, and the term "Taiwan Strait" is often used to refer to the connection between Taiwan and China.
Only 13 countries in the world recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state. But for the past 30-plus years, the Asian island has been ruled by a democracy that emerged from decades of military rule. This young democracy is now highly valued by the citizens.
Nearly 75% of eligible Taiwanese cast their ballots in the 2020 elections, and Taiwan's civil society is often considered the most open or free in all of Asia.

Taiwan is famous for its colorful election campaign culture. Lev Nachman, a political scientist at National Chengchi University in Taipei, compared it to "the Super Bowl circus," complete with campaign cookouts and rallies in local parks.
"Everybody grows up learning what it was like when there were no elections," he told NPR. "And I think that memory is what keeps people voting."
2. What do the colors represent?
The two major political coalitions, known as the colors green and blue, generally take opposing viewpoints on the central question of how to deal with China.
The Democratic Progressive Party (or DPP) is the current governing party. His presidential candidate is the incumbent Vice President Lai Ching-te (also known as William Lai).

3. Why is China so important to Taiwan's elections?
To answer this question, let's start with a little history.
Towards the end of the Chinese Civil War in the late 1940s, Mao Zedong's Chinese Communist Party ousted the Nationalists, led by Chiang Kai-shek. The latter group then retreated to the island of Taiwan and took control.
That Taiwanese government claimed all of Greater China, including the mainland and Mongolia, and China claimed all of Greater China, including Taiwan, under its control.
To this day, Taiwan's official name is the Republic of China (ROC) - not to be confused with the official name of China, which is the People's Republic of China (PRC). The abbreviations ROC and PRC are often heard when legal or diplomatic precision is required.
China has now assembled one of the strongest armies in the world. The ruling Communist Party (CCP) has never officially ruled Taiwan, but it has long regarded Taiwan as part of China.
Generations of CCP leaders, including the current president, Xi Jinping, have vowed to "reunify" Taiwan, by force if necessary.

While Taiwan's leaders face a host of domestic policy issues this election — relatively low wages, high housing prices, energy security, an aging population, and so on — the elephant in the room in Taiwan politics is often trans-Taiwan relations.
The threat of war with a larger neighbor and its much larger army is always there.
4. Where is the USA in all this?
The January elections will also have political consequences for the United States.
The US officially adheres to the so-called "one China policy", which recognizes China's claim to Taiwan, but considers Taiwan's sovereignty officially unsettled. But in recent years, the US-China rivalry has encouraged many in Washington (on both sides of the divide) to support Taipei as a stand-off against Beijing.

When then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022, the highest-ranking US official to visit the island in 15 years, China responded by sharply increasing military exercises across the Taiwan Strait.
Although the United States has tried to be strategically ambiguous about what it would offer Taiwan in the event of a military invasion — President Biden's recent statements aside — if China appears to be escalating its threats, the United States may show more of its hand.
Taiwan also boasts a highly developed economy and is the center of many key industries. First among these is the production of semiconductors, the key components of computer chips. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) alone manufactures more than 90% of the most advanced processors.
A major disruption of Taiwan's de facto sovereignty would cripple global supply chains and put billions of dollars of business worldwide at risk.
Looking at the big picture, the United States also has an interest in the only Chinese-speaking democracy - which is also a trading partner - remaining successful in the face of growing autocracy in the region and around the world.

The Taiwanese economy, once celebrated as a miracle, is no longer as dynamic as it once was. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth, which was still impressive at 6.6% in 2021, has fallen to 2.6% in 2022 and 1.4% in 2023.
It is therefore no wonder that as the elections on January 13 approach, the future prosperity of the municipal island is on the minds of many. Defense spending is indeed debated - but the military threat from China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, worries only a few voters, as two academics argued in the Australian Financial Review last week.
"According to some surveys, just under half of voters are worried about a possible war within the next five years," wrote Chung-min Tsai and Yves Tiberghien in their opinion piece.
Both men are researchers at the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science.

Taiwanese are used to the security threat, the authors said.
In contrast, "concerns about economic prospects and incomes, rising rents, energy security and inequality dominate political disengagement from government."
Industrial production slumps in Taiwan
Asian technology-producing giants like South Korea and Taiwan are feeling the pinch in global demand. South Korea's industry is on shaky ground, and in Taiwan this December, production fell for the 19th consecutive month, according to data from the Reuters news agency referring to purchasing managers' indexes.
Taiwan's economic momentum is slowing mainly due to slowing exports and weak Chinese demand for Taiwanese products. And while investment in Taiwan has also fallen, Min-Hua Chiang believes the resurgence in private consumption following the COVID outbreak has been a glimmer of hope. The Taiwanese researcher works for various American think tanks, including the Heritage Foundation and the East-West Center.
In addition to economic problems, structural problems are also emerging, and Taiwan is facing challenges typical of industrialized societies. One of the biggest is the rising cost of caring for an aging population.
An aging population means more social and less defense spending.
While Taiwan's inflation rate of 2.7% is relatively low compared to other industrialized countries, real wages for workers are falling. And now the island nation is paying the price for relying primarily on low wages and salaries to keep its export economy competitive.
For years, the government has been trying to alleviate the frustration of the population by increasing social benefits. By 2022, the government will spend 27% of its total expenditure on social security - three times as much as in 1994 - wrote Min-Hua Chiang in his analysis published last week in the trade journal East Asia Forum.
Relations with China face Taiwan's elections
Taiwan's rapidly aging population has a disproportionately large impact on national defense as well. According to UN estimates, the proportion of people over 65 will increase from 15 percent in 2019 to 35 percent by 2050.
As the population has aged and social spending has increased, Taiwan - under constant threat from Beijing - has spent proportionately less on defence. Today, it spends about 2.6% of GDP on its military; in previous decades, this proportion was closer to 10%. By comparison, members of the transatlantic military alliance, NATO, have set a goal of spending 2% of GDP on defense.
Taiwan held back by US-China tensions and Beijing's weakening economy
Taiwan's economy has flourished since the 1990s thanks to the export of technology-intensive industrial products to China. China's reforms and the easing of tensions with the United States have given a huge boost to economic cooperation between Taiwan and Beijing.
But after 30 years, this successful model seems to be running out of steam. Beijing's trade conflict with the United States, which began under former President Donald Trump, has only intensified under his successor, Joe Biden. And in addition to the consequences of Beijing's tough COVID measures, China's real estate crisis, indebted municipalities and provinces, and sluggish private consumption have all contributed to slowing economic growth.
While Taiwan's exports to China and Hong Kong fell from 44% in 2020 to 35% in 2023, its exports to the US, Europe and ASEAN countries increased by 7%. At the same time, Taiwanese investment in China fell by 17% to $2.5 billion (€2.29 billion) between January and October 2023 - while in the same period Taiwanese companies invested $9.6 billion in the United States and 2.3 billion dollars in Singapore.
There is no other company as dominant in Taiwan as the world's largest chip maker, semiconductor giant TSMC. The company accounts for more than a quarter - currently 27% - of the total market capitalization of all listed companies in Taiwan.
Taiwan, the semiconductor superpower
Taiwan's dependence on semiconductor manufacturing is enormous. Chips now account for 42% of the country's total exports and have grown by nearly 10% over the past decade. TSMC is now looking to significantly increase chip production in the United States and Europe with plants such as Phoenix, Arizona, and Dresden, Germany.
TSMC has already put up $40 billion to build a new manufacturing plant in Phoenix. It is not yet known how much it will spend on the 70% stake in the planned Dresden facility. The plant, operated jointly with partners Bosch, Infineon and NXP, is scheduled to start semiconductor production in 2027.
However, according to Alexander Sandkamp, an economist at Germany's Kiel Institute for the World Economy, this does not mean that TSMC is turning its back on China.
"As Taiwanese companies like TSMC see it, it makes sense to diversify production. We must also not forget that TSMC still has production facilities in China. Should China and the West separate - even without military escalation - the company could still provide both parties with chips," the researcher told DW.
A "new model" is needed for economic growth
"Taiwan is facing a turning point in its economic development," Min-Hua Chiang emphasized.
The researcher explained that Taiwan's economy initially experienced strong growth for 30 years, fueled by exports of consumer goods to the US. . Then, when China opened up, it saw another 30 years of growth fueled by exporting product components to China for final assembly.
Now is the time for Taiwan to "come up with a new model that will be the engine of economic growth for the next 30 years," he said.
The United States and China concluded two days of military talks in Washington on Tuesday, the Pentagon said. It was the latest meeting since the two countries agreed to resume military ties. US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed at the end of last year on the renewal of military relations, which Beijing severed after former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan in August 2022.

Relations between Beijing and Washington have deteriorated in recent years, and their disputes have multiplied, due to relations with Taiwan.
According to the information, "the two sides discussed the defense relationship between the United States and the People's Republic of China, and Chase emphasized the importance of maintaining open lines of military dialogue in order to prevent competition from escalating into conflict."
Pentagon officials say communication between the two militaries is key to preventing a miscalculation from escalating into conflict.
In an editorial on January 1, the official newspaper of the Chinese military promised to launch a war against corruption this year.
The top US military officer, Gen. Charles Q. Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, held a virtual meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Liu Chenli, last month.
China is ready to establish healthy and stable military-to-military relations with the United States based on equality and respect, Beijing's Ministry of Defense said
in a statement issued on Wednesday referring to the meeting. At the same time, he urged the United States to reduce the deployment of military forces and provocative actions in the South China Sea, and to stop supporting such actions by "certain countries."
The Chinese side also asked the United States to respect the one-China principle and to stop arming Taiwan, which China considers its own territory. As he emphasized, he will never compromise on this issue.
The Americans were a step ahead last year, but according to many, time is working for the Chinese.
"The United States must fully understand the roots of maritime and air security issues, strictly restrain its frontline forces, and stop exaggerating (the issues)," it said.
US officials warned that even with some restoration of military communications, it may take time for the two sides to have a truly workable dialogue.

How much do migrants cost taxpayers?
Economist Bernd Raffelhüschen calculated how much immigration will cost the German population in the long run. The Freiburg professor dispelled the myth that immigration saves pension and social security funds.

What's more, even the newer PAC-3 version performed horribly against much less high-tech opponents.
On the other hand, basic knowledge of how physics works makes the claims of the West and the Kiev regime laughable. The images show that the Russian weapon was allegedly hit by the "Patriot" kinetic killing vehicle, which in the PAC-2 variant flies at about 4,000 km/h. The speed of 9-A-7660 "Kinzhal" ranges from more than 12,000 km/h to nearly 16,000 km/h. If we imagine an interceptor missile flying at 4,000 km/h colliding with another missile flying three or four times faster, does anyone really believe that there would be more than a bunch of sparks, let alone any kind of wreckage? Worse still, the alleged "Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile" crashed to the ground in relatively good condition and was even photographed and presented as alleged "evidence".
Even some media outlets of the Kyiv regime, such as The Kyiv Independent, almost immediately denied the claims. Just a day after the incident, this channel reported that the Kiev regime forces denied the reports, as neither MiG-31K/I strike fighters nor 9-A-7660 "Kinzhal" were in the air that night. However, this did not stop mainstream propaganda publications from preaching about the story. Although it has since been debunked several times, as previously mentioned, this type of narrative continues unabated. On January 8th, Business Insider again published footage showing the alleged "hypersonic missile" being "shot down" by neo-Nazi junta forces. This time they were a little more cautious, claiming that they only found the missile's warhead, not the entire missile like last time.
"Kinzhal" was reportedly "shot down" on January 2, when the VKS launched a large-scale comprehensive strike that included hundreds of drones of various types, as well as ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles. To make the situation even more ridiculous, the forces of the Kiev regime claim that all ten "Kinzhals" were "shot" that night. I have already explained the sheer illogic of these claims. However, to further debunk this ridiculous narrative, we can use past admissions by the neo-Nazi junta itself. Notably, by their own account, even older weapons such as the P-800 "Onik" and the Soviet-era Kh-22, both supersonic anti-ship missiles, are impossible to shoot down. This is so obvious that even the mainstream propaganda machine doesn't bother to deny it.
It is important to note that both missiles are much less capable than "Kinzhal." The Kh-22, while nearly hypersonic at Mach 4.6, is still about 2.5-3 times slower. With a speed of Mach 2.6, the P-800 is more than 5 times slower than the "Kinzhal." In addition, both missiles are less maneuverable than the "Kinzhal." The obvious question arises that if it is impossible to shoot down such undeniably high-capacity weapons, then how is it possible that the Kiev regime "shoots down" the orders of magnitude more dangerous "Kinzhal", let alone ten? Ukraine Can't "Isolate" Crimea
President Zelensky's strategy to "isolate" Crimea and weaken Russian military capabilities there is irrational and unrealistic, especially considering the means by which Ukraine seeks to achieve this strategic goal.
The Ukrainian government, the Ukrainian army and their Western supporters have repeatedly stated that Crimea can be isolated and even conquered if Ukraine succeeds in destroying the Crimean bridge and disrupting the land bridge that connects Crimea via Kherson, Zaporizhzhya and the Donbass with the rest of Russia.
However, this ignores the fact that Crimea joined the Russian Federation following a referendum in 2014, and the Crimean bridge will not be completed until 2018, the railway bridge in 2019 and the land bridge in 2022. This means that Russia could supply both the civilian population and its military bases on the peninsula for several years without either.
If Ukraine succeeded in destroying the Crimean bridge and cutting off the land bridge, Crimea would still be able to connect its population, goods, weapons and ammunition to the rest of Russia through a series of seaports and airports that annually handle millions of tons of cargo and more they could transport a million people.
Only the port of Kerch claims on its official website that its facilities can handle up to 3 million tons of cargo. The port can also accommodate ferries carrying passengers and vehicles. Whether this strategy will be successful remains to be seen. Similar "strategies" to increase the cost of Russian military operations in the hope of turning public opinion against the Russian government have been used in Russia's military intervention in Syria since 2015. Despite this, Russian military operations have been extremely successful, and the Russian military is still present in Syria today, strengthening both Syria's and Russia's position in the region.
The logistical realities of the battlefield will ultimately make it impossible for the US and its allies to sustain this proxy war, forcing them to either cut their losses in Ukraine or risk dangerous escalation through more direct intervention. Only time will tell what they choose. In the meantime, Washington and Kiev's insistence on unattainable 2024 targets means that this will be Ukraine's toughest year yet.

The aim of this study was to investigate WNT gene expression, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, specific cytokines, m-TOR expression, neuropathology and neurobehavioral outcomes related to autism in a rat model.
Pregnant rats received the COVID-19 mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine during pregnancy. Subsequent assessments of the male and female offspring examined autism-like behavior, neuron number, and motor performance. Molecular techniques were used to quantify WNT and m-TOR gene expression, BDNF levels and specific cytokines in brain tissue samples.
The results were then contextualized within the existing literature to identify potential mechanisms. Our results show that mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine significantly alters WNT gene expression and BDNF levels in both male and female rats, suggesting profound effects on key neurodevelopmental pathways.
Remarkably, the male rats showed pronounced autism-like behavior characterized by a significant reduction in social interaction and repetitive behavior patterns. Furthermore, the number of neurons in critical brain regions was significantly reduced, suggesting potential neurodegeneration or altered neurodevelopment.
The male rats also showed reduced motor performance, which was indicated by reduced coordination and mobility. Our research provides insight into the effects of the COVID-19 mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine on WNT gene expression, BDNF levels and certain neurodevelopmental markers in a rat model.
Further, more extensive studies are needed to confirm these observations in humans and to reveal the exact mechanisms. (...)
